About Me

Overview

My name is Sean Fruman, and I’m a junior at Cornell University majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Born and raised in Long Island, New York, I’ve developed a wide range of interests and passions — with music being one of the most significant. I love singing and playing the guitar, drums, saxophone, and oboe. Outside of music, I enjoy surfing, biking, staying active, and exploring my interests in film, history, and technology.

Being an engineering student at Cornell has allowed me to connect these passions in meaningful ways. As Team Lead of the Cornell Mars Rover Project, I apply my technical and leadership skills to real-world engineering challenges, while also pursuing my musical side through the Cornell Jazz Ensembles and an independent rock band. I’m driven by curiosity, creativity, and collaboration — and I look forward to discovering new opportunities to grow and make an impact.

My Core Values

Creativity

Creativity allows me to express myself in ways that words alone cannot. Whether I’m playing music, planning events, or designing components for my project team, I always strive to add a personal creative touch. It’s my way of leaving a signature on everything I do—turning ideas into something uniquely my own.

Gratification

I’m guided by a pursuit of genuine gratification in the things I choose to do. Engaging in work and experiences that bring fulfillment helps me stay grounded and authentic to who I am. I find peace and balance in moments that remind me of this—like long journeys or quiet sunsets that leave me feeling centered and content.

Spontaneity

Spontaneity fuels my excitement for life and work. I thrive in moments of unpredictability, where I can make quick decisions and adapt naturally to change. Acting in the moment keeps me engaged, creative, and open to opportunities that structured plans might overlook.

Openness

To me, openness means embracing new ideas, people, and experiences with curiosity rather than hesitation. It’s about keeping a clear mind and being receptive to growth. At Cornell, this value helps me connect with diverse teams, explore new opportunities, and continuously expand both my perspective and skill set.

My Strengths

Restorative

I’m skilled at analyzing problems from multiple perspectives and developing effective solutions. This strength shines most in collaborative environments such as team projects. During design reviews for my project team, I often identify potential flaws or areas for improvement, which spark productive discussions and lead to stronger, more refined outcomes.

Empathy

Empathy enables me to form meaningful connections and foster a positive team culture. I value being able to understand others’ perspectives and remain mindful of my own actions in different contexts. This quality helps me build trust and maintain genuine relationships with my colleagues—many of whom I’m proud to call friends.

Adaptability

I excel in dynamic environments and adjust easily to changing schedules, workflows, or priorities. I approach new challenges with composure and creativity, quickly finding ways to adapt. In music, for example, I demonstrate this same flexibility by improvising smoothly over changing chord progressions on guitar.

My Professional Goals

I am striving to become a skilled mechanical engineer, wherever my career path leads. My fascination with mechanical systems began at a young age — understanding how things work has always brought me a deep sense of curiosity and fulfillment. I aim to explore which areas of mechanical engineering resonate most with me by pursuing diverse experiences such as internships and hands-on projects.

During my summer internship at L3Harris, I applied my academic knowledge to real-world challenges, developing solutions that benefited both the company and its customers. This experience strengthened my technical foundation and reinforced my desire to expand the scope of my impact across new applications and industries.

In addition to my technical development, I continually strive to grow as a leader. As Team Lead for the Cornell Mars Rover Project, I’ve applied key managerial and leadership skills to guide a multidisciplinary team, foster collaboration, and drive complex projects to completion. I look forward to applying and expanding these skills in a long-term professional setting.

Beyond engineering and leadership, I value building meaningful relationships and networks. I believe that strong connections — with peers, mentors, and colleagues — are essential for both personal growth and professional success. At Cornell, I’m intentional about cultivating relationships that endure beyond college and evolve into lasting, mutually supportive partnerships. A diverse and dependable network not only broadens perspectives but also creates opportunities to grow and contribute together.
